Ski

Lebanon's the only country in the Middle East where you can naturally ski for a large part of winter. Given the country's geographical location and topography, the slopes have always been ideal for this sport. But unfortunately, people have only come to their pleasurable discovery after the 1950s when the first ski lift was established, although it was only enough to handle so little.

As interest in the sport kept growing, the Lebanese government built other ski lifts, which brought in top skiers and snow sports lovers from all over the globe.

Today, Lebanon boasts six ski resorts catering to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, and offers kilometers of backcountry Nordic cross-country and snowshoe trails waiting to be explored.

Each ski resort has its own local flavor. For example, the Cedars Ski Resort (2,000-3,086m), near Mount Makmel (2,800m), is located on the highest range and offers the most scenic landscapes. Other resorts, such as Laqlouq (1,650-1,920m) and Qanat Bakiche (1,910-2,050m), are known for their family-oriented, friendly atmosphere. Faqra - Kfardebian (1,735-1,980m) and Zaarour (1,700-2,000m) are private ski resorts, with special “peak” times reserved for members.

But the best resort in terms of world-class infrastructure and facilities is by far Tourisme et Sports d'Hiver Mzaar Ski Resort in Faraya (1,830-2,465m), offering 42 slopes and 80 km of ski tracks. Located in a modern-day area with the charm of an old Alpine village, the resort offers skiing with a personal coach, extreme mountain races, 4x4 rides across uncharted paths, ATV and snowmobile traverses over the hills, paragliding, or climbing. Faraya and its neighboring Faqra village are renowned for après-ski entertainment and nightlife, which are well suited for skiers looking for a night on the town. While wandering the area, be sure to check out Ricky's restaurant and Igloo pub.

No matter what resort you choose, skiing is so widespread in winter that many people purchase or rent cabins and cosy chalets to keep coming back for more on weekends. Many hotels, luxurious and simple, are present for those who like the change.
