Damage to archaeological sites

The mission also found that the main features of the world heritage site of Tyre, such as the Roman hippodrome and triumphal arch had escaped damage, but that frescoes in a Roman tomb at the site had come loose, likely because of vibrations caused by bombs. It was also reported that the world heritage site of Baalbek was not damaged by bombs, with the exception of the fall of one block of stone and the widening of fissures on the lintels in the temples of Jupiter and Bacchus, likely due to vibrations from nearby bombings. Also damaged by bombs, as noted by the mission, were the souk and some old houses in the Old City of Baalbek that were not part of the property inscribed on the World Heritage List.

At a press conference revealing the results of the survey, Françoise Rivière, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Culture, reported on UNESCO's efforts during and after the fighting to draw the attention of both parties to their obligations to spare cultural heritage, as protected by the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, to which both Lebanon and Israel are States Parties.

Thanks for stopping by and the kind words Merrill. It took me a while but I did find the Official rcdores for the Salem Lutheran Cemetery. To say the best, it was a mess. I did finally sort it all out and entered all the names that were in the rcdores into my data base which I am sure you have seen on this site. I just checked and there is no Daniel Price. That doesn't mean that he isn't buried there, but there are no rcdores of it. I can't give you the name of the person with the rcdores because I'm sure you won't get a response from him. He isn't a computer person and not even the person that is supposed to have the rcdores. It is a mess to say the least. If I remember correctly, and I'm not sure I do, in the oldest part of the cemetery they aren't even sure where the graves are so they don't bury anyone there. I'm not sure about that though. Originally there was a church at the front of the area and but it is long gone.Yes, a number of the stones are just piled up. They were just thrown every which way between two trees. My wife and I took them all out of the pile, cleaned them, took photos and then piled them back neatly rather than in a heap.I'm sorry I can't be of more help. Thanks again for stopping by.Bob Jones Cristina | 14 March 2012
